Yesterday, we went to a nearby breakfast cafe called Food which was a few blocks east of Overland and Pico. The menu looked good, but most of the reviews online seemed to say that the food was pretty mediocre. We were short on time, hungry, and needed a place nearby to eat, so we gave this place a try. The reviews were dead on.

I had one of the day’s specials: eggs benedict with smoked salmon and a side of asparagus. I love eggs benedict and can never turn them down if they’re on the menu unfortunately, since eggs benedict is hard to get right. I wasn’t expecting these to be perfect because of how hard it is to perfect, but I did expect the eggs to be at least runny, which they weren’t! One of the best things (other than the sauce) about eggs benedict is the runny, poached egg and this dish definitely disappointed in that department. I’ve made hard boiled eggs that were more runny than the two on this plate.

The asparagus was a bit lack-luster too. It was fresh and all, but boiled asparagus just isn’t that exciting.

The BF’s cousin ordered the breakfast sandwich, which she said was just alright. What she raved about were the potatoes. I had a bite and they were great! The marinara sauce and squirt of aioli really made them stand out.

The BF got the tofu scramble with baguette. It was good from the taste I had of it. I liked how it was sweeter than other tofu scrambles I’ve had and the peppers were cooked well. The baguette that came with the dish was a bit uh…too toasted though.

Overall, even though we weren’t expecting much, we left disappointed. The place has a cute decor and fantastic plating presentation, but they need to work less on those things and more on actual taste. If the food tasted as good as it looked, I would be happy to have this brunch place so nearby.
