Love in a Fallen City

Love in a Fallen CityI picked up Eileen Chang’s Love in a Fallen City after watching Lust, Caution because I had an urge to read about Shanghai during and after WWII.

Love in a Fallen City is a collection of short stories and novellas all featuring plots about broken relationships. It’s not as depressing as it sounds, but it’s not really a feel-good book either. I liked the rich descriptions of all the different parts of the cities and the social dynamic between characters.

Reading the book feels like living in an apartment where you know intimate details of all the separate tennants even though the stories don’t run parallel to each other. Unfortunately, maybe I read it too quickly, but now I can’t separate one story from the other.
