Yi-Mei Chinese Bakery Shop - Monterey Park, CA 91754

dsc_0006.jpg We went to Yi Mei this morning for some northern Chinese breakfast. The BF has been ordering this drink the past few times we’ve gone there. It’s a sweet drink with sugared water, white wood-ear mushrooms and dates. It tastes weird at first, especially the texture of the mushrooms, but it grows on you.

This is the first time we’ve gotten one of the appetizer plates at Yi Mei. This one had baked tofu and some sort of mustard green. Despite the chili pepper on top of it, it wasn’t spicy. But it was salty and delicious.

The salty dou jiang is what we usually get. It’s fresh soy milk curdled with bits of you tiao, green onion, and preserved cabbage soaking inside. It has a satisfying smoky taste that’s great with a fresh and crunchy you tiao.

I also got a sandwich filled with slices of braised beef, preserved vegetables, and cilantro. The bread is a flakey sesame roll. The you tiao is in the back. The meat in the sandwich has a good and savory flavor, but definitely order something to drink like soy milk or dou jiang with this because the bread part is so dry it’ll suck all the moisture out of your mouth. I think that’s intentional.
