While moving to the westside wasn’t/isn’t really ideal other than the fact that I’ll be a mile away from work, I’m sad to be moving away from my old neighborhood. I was happy that I was going to get away from annoying ESH’s and I no longer have to be paranoid about me turning into one, but it’s just too ironic that the week before I move all my stuff out, I discover two places I really like.
The first place is Orange 20 Bikes, a very little orange shack of a bike store, where I got my bike from. They don’t look like much from the outside, but the people who run it seem to be pretty knowledgeable and approachable even though I was a bit intimidated by all the “bike people” hanging around outside the store and across the street at the Bicycle Kitchen. It’s sad that I’m moving away from there because now, if I want them to repair/fix my bike, I’d have to drive 20 miles across town with my bike to get to them.
The second place that I’ll miss is this little gelato place called Scoops across from the bike shop. The BF and I have been meaning to try it out for months, but we kept putting it off and when we finally did venture over there one night, it was too late and they were closed for the night. I finally tried it for the first time when I went to go order my bike and I loved it. The best part about Scoops is that the owner, Tai Kim, comes up with crazy combinations of flavors. Last night, I tried a scoop of the chocolate & wasabi flavored and it was surprisingly good. It tastes exactly like what you would think chocolate and wasabi would taste like, but not in a bad way. It had a strong chocolate taste with the familiar wasabi burn after. While I liked it, I don’t think I’ll order it again for a while. It was a bit too intense. Another great thing about Scoops is that their “one scoop” is more like two scoops with two flavors and it’s only $2.
The place has a nice down-to-earth feel to it without being all shabby. There’s also a corner in the restaurant with a shelf of DVDs and VHS tapes that seems to be free for anyone to borrow and return. I guess the place has been getting a lot of business because of a recent mention in Yelp, but I heard Tai is contacting Yelp to get Scoops removed from the site because he doesn’t want to be associated with all the gelato hype and he just wants to be a gelato place for locals. I don’t know why, but that type of modesty makes me like the place even more and makes me even more sad to move away from it.
