In this post, I talk about Proof, tv shows, and my new guilty pleasure

I’m trying to cover a week or two of not posting anything, so this is going to be one long post about a movie I watched recently, Proof (Jake as a math nerd makes me melt like butter), Battlestar Galactica (a sci-fi drama but what’s up with all the drama lately?), and jeans.

On Proof:
The BF, even though he denies it, suggested we watched Proof the other day. It’s a movie based on a play with the same name about a schizophrenic math genius’s equally as talented and slightly crazy daughter. I like movies about math (except that stupid one with Russell Crowe) so I was interested in this movie but what was icing on the cake was that Jake Gyllenhaal is also in this movie. He plays a math nerd grad student. His character was a little hard to believe because he wasn’t awkward enough and pretty well groomed for a math nerd. Even the good looking math grad students I know aren’t that well groomed!

The movie itself was decent. I didn’t feel very satisfied in the end because even though the problem was resolved, we’re not actually shown how it was resolved.

On BSG:
I’ve been a fan of the new BSG series since the beginning, but season three seems to be different than the previous seasons. Maybe it’s because season 3 started with such a big bang that none of the following episodes could compare, but the writing feels like it’s going in a whole other direction. Seasons 1 and 2 were more plot driven — focussing on the Cylon opposition and finding Earth. There was plenty of drama on the ship, but it takes a back seat to you know, the survival of mankind.

After the two-part opener of season 3, the rest of the episodes seem to be more character driven now. Nothing actually happens in the plot, but there’s so much drama between crew members. It’s like watching Grey’s Anatomy, but on a space ship. Now I love Grey’s Anatomy, but I don’t want to see Grey’s Anatomy type plots on BSG. I guess the writers are running out of things to keep the tension high because really, how many episodes can they make about “We found Earth! Oh wait oops, the cylons are coming, just kidding!”

I read somewhere that BSG just signed on for a 5th season. I hope they have enough material to last that long and the show doesn’t end up being a big let down like some other shows that started off well. Lost, I’m talking about you.

My guilty pleasure:
So much for not buying anything. That lasted about two weeks. I blame Chinese New Year. There’s a superstition/tradition that on Chinese New Year, you have to wear a completely new outfit from head to toe to bring good luck for the coming year. Not wanting to risk losing any good luck, I figured I might as well buy some jeans. Not just any jeans. But jeans that I went looking for for a whole day and still couldn’t find in any store! I ended up ordering it online.

I don’t why it’s so frustrating finding jeans that I like. I don’t think I’m that picky. I just want jeans that look good, last a long time, and don’t look like I was dragged under a bus for five miles. I never understood the whole grungey jeans full of holes thing.

So why is this a guilty pleasure? Because I could have bought a new DSLite and a game with the amount I spent on my new jeans! Grrr. When I bought them I thought, “Damn, these cost a lot, but if they really last as long as people say, I won’t have to buy another pair of jeans for at least another year. So in the long run, I’m saving money!” Ah, how wrong I was. That was like, the gateway jean. Now I can’t stop looking at some stupid denim forum and looking at jean porn. There’s another pair of jeans that I really like from Japan but luckily, they’re out of stock until the end of the month.

I really hope I didn’t give up my buying games hobby only to pick up a more expensive buying jeans hobby.

i treated myself with new jeans too. original stone washed levi’s 501’s .. cost a fortune even on sale, but i wanted to have somehting for going out, since pretty much all i wear are jeans anyway.

gonna see how long they last. the last pair i bought lasted two years of constant daily wear, then they started to get thin.

I have problems with finding new jeans as well. I keep buying pairs thinking, “oh, they’ll do for now”, because I don’t want to spend a lot of money on them, and I end up owning lots of pairs that I don’t really like…
