Last week, the BF and I attended a knife skills class. No, we didn’t learn how to kill a man with one single slice to the throat. It wasn’t those knife skills. It was a kitchen knife skills class. As in: how to french chop onions, julienne carrots, and slice peppers. The class itself was okay, but there was one lady attending who really surprised me.

How can anyone be so stupid? You’d think if you were taking a hands-on cooking class, you’d trim your nails, but no, she had these fairly long french-tipped nails that I think she accidentally cut into a couple of times. There were points during the class where I thougth she was going to cut me when she was haphazardly waving the knife around.

Maybe this woman had a learning disability or something (which I would feel bad about now that I think of it), but she just couldn’t understand instructions at all. When the instructor was teaching us how to hone a knife, she kept doing the exact opposite of what she was supposed to.

“Carve down at an 22 degree angle with the knife.”

She would move the blade up the honing steel at a 90 degree angle.

“No, go down.”

I think at some point, she was actually sawing at the honing steel with the blade. You don’t need to be Martha Stewart to know that doing that dulls the knife, not sharpens it.
