dotstream is the first of a couple bitGenerations to come out. bitGenerations is a collection of graphically simple games that reminds me of “the old days.”
dotstream is essentially a racer where you guide your racer (a colored line) through an obsticle course towards a finish line. The gameplay is pretty simple: you draft other players by racing next to their line. Only one player can occupy one line at the same time, so you’re automatically moved to the next empty spot if you try to move into a line of the player in front of you. Driving in a straight line increases speed, making turns will decrease speed. There are items and boosts on the way to help out.
Sometimes the simplest games are the most engaging, and this is one of those times. It took me one or two races to get the hang of it, and winning a race seems to require remembering which obstacles come up. Luckily, most of the tracks are short, so racing a few times on them will get rid of all surprises. I just finished the Sonic GP and unlocked the next GPs, but those tracks are considerably harder, which is a good thing. My favorite part of the game is the music. It reminds me of the PDA game music from Alien Hominid: simple and 8bit sounding.
I like the concept of bitGenerations: making simple games that are fun. I picked up dotstream because out of all the bitGenerations game that were available, this one looked the most interesting. Unfortunately, I don’t know if the gameplay is enough to hold my interest. So far, I’ve been trying to unlock all the tracks just to hear new music. If that’s their gimmick, it worked.
