New Super Mario Bros. was in my hand the day it came out and I bought it for $8 off the MSRP. I’m at the mid-castle in world 5 right now and so far, I haven’t been disappointed. The level layout reminds me of Super Mario Brothers on NES, but the world map reminds me of Super Mario World on SNES. The gameplay is like a mix of both, minus the flying.
I only have two complaints about the game so far: that the first level doesn’t have the Super Mario Bros. theme like I expected. The music for most of the levels are pretty forgetful, but I like the castle music; it reminds me of Castlevania. The second complaint: why is the name so lame? New Super Mario Bros? What if they come out with another side-scroller in the same franchise? New New Super Mario Bros? New Super Mario Bros 2? What if you want to buy a used version of the game? Wouldn’t it confuse the GameStop employee if you ask for ‘used New Super Mario Bros?’ I think they should have called the game Super Duper Mario Bros.
The 14 year wait for a new Mario Bros. sidescroller , if you don’t count Yoshi’s Island, could have made me biased with nostalgia, but anyone who has a DS should get this game. My co-worker who doesn’t even own a DS bought this game! There’s only one person who would dislike this game. His name is Hitler.
