Review: Nochnoi Dozor (Night Watch)
Night Watch was playing at a theater down the street from my house and after hearing pretty good opinions of it, I went to watch it. It’s the first installment of a Russian trilogy and it while not sci-fi, it reminded me a little of Star Wars. The movie is about two groups of “Others” (non-humans): the Light Others and the Dark Others.
The main plot of the movie is pretty generic with it’s light vs. dark rivalry, but the details were what made it worth watching. I watched it subtitled in theaters and it was the best subtitling I have evern seen in a movie. Most subtitles in movies are static, but the ones in here were dynamic and interacted with the scenes. Some words would be tinted red and fade away like smoke, and others would be wiped away by a character passing by the screen.
Some may say that it’s too early in the trilogy to tell if the whole thing will be good or not, but if the next two movies are anything like the first one, I’ll buy tickets to see them too.
