Initial Thoughts: Darkwatch

I thought Darkwatch was going to be a lot better than it is. So far, it looks to be a pretty mediocre and generic FPS. There doesn’t seem to be much of a introduction because when I started the game, it just dumped me onto a train without any explanation about why I’m shooting things and picking up guns.

This game seems to take a step back with enemy AI. There are two types of enemies here. The first type runs straight at you in a fairly straight line, the second type shoots at you, runs behind cover, shoots at you, repeat.

As if the AI wasn’t boring enough already, the game progresses incredibly linearly. I’m only about an hour into the game and playing it already feels tedious. Most of the maps in the single player campaign are predictably simple. So far, I’ve encountered only these types of maps:

  1. Shoot N amount of enemies until either a cut scene occurs, opening a previously unaccessible part of the map, or a different set of enemies, M, spawns, repeat.
  2. Run from the beginning of one area to the next, trying not to die in the process.

The game’s not very fun yet, even with newly acquired vampire powers. I’m going to give this game another try tomorrow, if not, on to the next game!
